Astronomy Computing Facility Page
- There have been a few slight changes to the way the web server is
configured. These changes have been approved by the computer committee
and are intended to increase web security in the future as well as to
make recovery from future crashes a bit easier. We apologize for
any inconvenience.
- If you read the instructions below and you don't have an html
web directory yet don't panic. It will be added soon. This is being
done by hand and it takes a while, Your patience and understanding
is appreciated!
- Your web directory will reside on the disk /home/httpd/html which
is being exported from sbast3 to many of the machines in the Astronomy
group. The disk will be mounted on your machine as /www . This means
that your web directory will be /www/your_user_name . We realize that
this is a bit different than our previous configuration but it
is advantageous to do this for a number of reasons that we won't describe
here.
- Your new URL will be "http://www.ess.sunysb.edu/you_user_name".
Note that there is no "~" in this as there previously was. You'll
need to modify your html files by getting rid of these tildes for
both links to your own files and links to files of other group
members.
- We only have approximately 750 Mbytes of public html
space for the moment, so please try not to load huge files
in your html directory. We have more disk space on the way
and we'll let you know when it's ready.
- Your old html files are still available under your
public_html directory. You can simply copy them over to your
new web directory and make the changes mentioned above and
they should work. Make sure to set the file permissions
so that they are world readable and permissions on any subdirectories
that you make have so that they are executable.

- sbast3 is acting as a mail server & forwarder. Most of you are
currently able to receive mail as your_user_name@sbast3.ess.sunysb.edu
or as your_user_name@mail.astro.sunysb.edu or
your_user_name@mail.ess.sunysb.edu. This mail is forwarded to
another machine such as vulcan. If I didn't know where to forward
your email I sent it to vulcan so check there. If you want it forwarded
elsewhere please email sysman@mail.astro.sunysb.edu.
- If you don't have an email account on sbast3 yet (assuming you had
one before the crash) email me at sysman@mail.astro.sunysb.edu and I'll
get it added ASAP.

- The hp printer in the computer room is having problems with the
paper feed from the lower tray. Placing paper in the lower tray will
cause the printer to jam. Please avoid doing so until this problem
is resolved.
